A lot of Actros: Caledonian Logistics invests in 35 trucks

News

Caledonian Logistics opted for the best of both worlds with its latest fleet order.

In other words, it has chosen Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks in rigid and tractor unit form for its fleet.

The Aberdeenshire-based company’s 35 new vehicles are being supplied by local dealer BLS Truck & Van.

Most are replacing trucks from two other manufacturers that have reached the ends of their contract hire terms.

However, Caledonian Logistics is also increasing its total fleet to 80 vehicles.

The 16 tractor units in the new order are already in service.

Specifically, they are all 2551 models with flat-floored BigSpace cabs.

In addition, they are all powered by 12.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engines with 510hp.

Furthermore, the new additions to the Caledonian Logistics fleet all have 12-speed automated manual transmissions.

The tractor units are making nightly trucking runs to the Palletways hub in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

As a result, each truck will average around 320,000km a year.

Meanwhile, the rigids will be used for local collections and deliveries.

The first two to be delivered are both 18-tonne 1827 models with curtainside bodies.

The duo are powered by 7.7-litre engines, rated at 272hp) and feature 2.3-metre StreamSpace sleeper cabs.

They will be joined over the coming weeks by another 12 identical vehicles and four 26-tonne Actros 2536 variants.

The addition of more Actros models was helped by the performance of existing Mercedes-Benz trucks on the fleet, said Derek Mitchell, Caledonian Logistics.

“We’ve returned to Mercedes-Benz with this order in part because we were offered shorter lead times than rival brands could quote.

“In addition, because our dealer – BLS Truck & Van has made great strides since taking over the franchise for the north of Scotland,” he added.
