BJ Waters opts for upgraded Mercedes-Benz Actros duo

News

Derbyshire’s BJ Waters has commissioned a pair of ‘fit for purpose’ Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks.

The bulk tipping and hazardous load specialist is running the two tractor units with a number of special additions.

For example, the trucks have steel bumpers and raised ride heights, which restricts damage when working on rough sites.

The trucks are the first Mercedes-Benz trucks to grace the BJ Waters fleet since 2015.

A key factor in the decision to go back to the German brand was the fuel efficiency of the new Actros.

In addition, the two trucks generated plenty of positive feedback from drivers during a trial at the operator.

Both tractor units are Actros 2551 variants with flat-floored, aerodynamic StreamSpace cabs.

Importantly, repair costs should be limited by BJ Waters choosing to spec steel bumpers instead of the standard plastic.

Also, the trucks feature the same straight front axle and headlight arrangement as a flat-floored unit from the Arocs construction range.

The latter option offers up to 85mm (depending on tyre choice) of additional ground clearance.

Therefore, there is less risk of underbody damage caused by ‘bottoming out’ or getting stuck during off-road manoeuvres.

Meanwhile, the vehicles come heavily loaded with technology and advanced equipment.

For example, the Actros models have MirrorCam, replacing conventional door mirrors.

The company also chose Predictive Powertrain Control and Active Brake Assist 5 with enhanced pedestrian recognition capability.

However, rather than the standard-fit Multimedia Cockpit, BJ Waters opted for the interactive upgrade.

The trucks have larger, 12in instrument panels and extra functionality, including satellite navigation.

Driver Andy Garton said he’s been a fan of Actos for years and thinks MirrorCam is “fantastic”.

“This truck is a joy in so many ways,” he adds.

“Thanks to Predictive Powertrain Control, when I’m on the open road it practically drives itself.”
