Every little helps: Tesco goes electric with Renault Trucks

News

Tesco’s latest fleet additions are electric with Renault Trucks suppling an 18-tonne E-Tech D Wide.

The truck is Tesco’s first electric model at that payload, thereby adding to the supermarket’s green credentials.

In addition, the company is set to welcome more zero-emission trucks in the coming weeks.

For now, though, the E-Tech D-Wide EV will be delivering to more than 400 Greater London Stores from its Dagenham base.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK and ROI CEO explained the decision to combine its latest electric with Renault Trucks.

“The Tesco distribution network provides us with a great opportunity to roll out new technologies like this truck.

“We’re really excited about the improvements we’re making across our business and our transition to electric vehicles.”

The 18-tonner features many elements that need to be powered by the truck’s batteries.

For example, inside the Solomon Commercials refrigeration body there’s Carrier TRS Syberia 11 equipment.

That unit is fed via a 600V TVJB Fridge power supply unit.

The unit has been built to Tesco’s specification, which includes a rear shutter door and 1500kg column tail lift.

Powered by 265kWh, 600V lithium-ion batteries the truck delivers maximum power of 496hp peak.

Meanwhile, continuous power is 349hp and maximum torque of 425Nm.

The vehicle comes with Renault Trucks Battery Performance Promise.

As a result, there is a guarantee the battery will operate for up to 10 years.

Either that, or it will deliver 300MW of energy over the vehicle’s life.

The D Wide E-Tech will recharge at Tesco’s newly installed electric charge points at its Dagenham distribution centre.

Finally, aftersales support for the E-Tech D Wide is provided by Renault Truck Commercials Essex.

Funding comes from by Renault Trucks Financial Services on a full service lease.
